Angelo State Writers Conference in Honor of Elmer Kelton

Award-winning western novelist Anne Hillerman will be the featured speaker for Angelo State University’s 21st annual Writers Conference in Honor of Elmer Kelton March 23-24 in the ASU Auditorium inside the Mayer Administration Building, 2601 W. Ave. N.

Hillerman is the best-selling author of the latest novels in the Joe Leaphorn Navaho Mystery Series that was originally created by her late father, Tony Hillerman, in 1970. She will give two presentations during the ASU Writers Conference on Thursday, March 23. At 9:30 a.m., she will give “A Conversation with Anne Hillerman” hosted by Dr. Nicole Dilts of the ASU English faculty. She will then present “An Evening with Anne Hillerman” at 7 p.m. Both presentations are open free to the public. 

The two-day conference will also include nine sessions, three on March 23 and six on March 24, featuring readings and presentations by 23 guest authors and poets. The guest writers have produced thousands of publications, including over 100 books, and include three Texas Poets Laureate and four winners of the Western Writers of America’s prestigious Spur Award. Hillerman has penned the three most recent novels in the Joe Leaphorn Navaho Mystery Series that already consisted of 18 books at the time of her father’s death in 2008. Her first book in the series, “Spider Woman’s Daughter,” quickly hit the New York Times best-seller list and won the 2013 Spur Award for Best First Novel from the Western Writers of America. “Rock with Wings” followed in 2015, and her third novel in the series, “Song of the Lion,” is scheduled for release by HarperCollins in April.
