One year after suffering a life-threatening drug-related overdose at a brothel in Nevada, Lamar Odom "seems to be in a good place."

According to a PEOPLE source, the NBA player is currently enjoying a quieter life during his journey to stay healthy.

"Lamar’s life has become a lot more quiet," the source says. "He is moving back to L.A. from N.Y. and away from some bad influences. He knows he needs to be in a good place to stay healthy. A lot of what happened last year is a blur for Lamar but he knows he almost didn’t make it. There are so many people still rooting for Lamar — he’s a good guy. But it’s been very hard for him to keep his demons in check. He’s had a hard life."

Despite his struggle, Odom reportedly "wants to work again" and is on the path to total recovery.

"Now, Lamar seems to be in a good place," PEOPLE's source claims. "He wants to work again and he wants to be healthy. Everyone who cares about Lamar hopes there won’t be any scares again."

On October 13, 2015, Odom was rushed, unconscious, to a hospital in Las Vegas after being discovered at the Bunny Love Ranch brothel. He was in a coma and placed on life support for days before regaining consciousness.

The basketball player suffered from kidney damage, mobility and cognitive impairment, strokes and other related medical issues during the ordeal.

Meanwhile, Odom's ex Khloe Kardashian, who is currently dating NBA player Tristan Thompson, is reportedly not speaking to Odom, despite her having been by his side during his recovery.

"Khloe and Lamar have not spoken in months. It just got to be too hard," a second source told PEOPLE. "She will always care about him, but she had to finally move on and make herself happy."
