‘Ant-Man 3’ Is in Development, With Peyton Reed and Paul Rudd
Here is some huge/tiny Marvel news for your weekend.
Ant-Man is coming to Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to The Hollywood Reporter, work is underway on a third Ant-Man film that would star Paul Rudd as thief-turned-shrinking-hero Scott Lang. Peyton Reed, who directed by Ant-Man and Ant-Man and the Wasp, will return to direct the third movie:
The Ant-Man corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will continue to be Peyton Reed’s Place. The director, who helmed 2015’s Ant-Man and 2018’s Ant-Man and the Wasp, has signed on to helm a third Ant-Man movie, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Paul Rudd is expected to return as Scott Lang, the heist-hearting hero with the power of petiteness in the new installment. It would be Rudd's fifth time out as the character, barring any other surprise appearances.
The first Ant-Man was one of the most troubled pictures in the MCU. It was originally announced alongside the very first Iron Man, and was expected to be directed by Edgar Wright. The film never came together, though, and Wright dropped out before shooting began. He was replaced by Reed, who then returned for Ant-Man and the Wasp, which was, by all accounts, a much smoother production. Both movies did well at the box office, although they rank among the lowest-grossing Marvel films to date; Ant-Man is ahead of just The Incredible Hulk and Captain America: The First Avenger as the third smallest domestic hit in the MCU. But I guess that’s kind of appropriate in this case.
The movie is expected to begin shooting in 2020 or 2021 for release in 2022, after most or all of what has already been announced for Marvel’s Phase 4, which kicks off next spring with Black Widow.
