Baby Formula Shortages Mean Limits for San Angelo Parents
The nightmare of Covid-19 seems to be diminishing. There have been rebounds of infection rates in some countries, but so far, Covid rates continue to fall here in the San Angelo area. Despite this, issues caused by the epidemic and the quarantine continue to cause problems.
The biggest problems have been supply line issues. On top of ongoing Covid related issues, 6 weeks ago Russia invaded Ukraine. This has caused a whole new round of problems. As a result, there continue to be spot shortages of many items.
This is hitting our babies very hard. Supply issues have caused shortages of baby formula. Things have gotten so bad, that retailers announced yesterday baby formula purchases will be limited to no more than three per customer.
Walgreens was the first to announce that they will be limiting formula purchases to three per customer. Soon afterwards, CVS, Target, and supermarket chain Kroger announced they too would be limiting baby formula purchases. A recent study by Datasembly, a company that tracks retail supplies reports that 29% of all the top selling baby formulas are out of stock.
This situation is being further complicated by a major recall back in February when Abbott recalled a number of its products including its dominant Similac formulas due to bacteria contamination at their Michigan factory.
While the shortages are troubling, parents of babies on formula are urged not to panic. The Infant Nutrition Council of America recommends parents not hoard formula. They advise that a 10-14 day supply is enough.
