Bruce Springsteen Performs Surprise Cover of ‘We Shall Overcome’ at Norway Memorial Concert
While we in America are dealing with last week’s tragic shootings in Colorado, Bruce Springsteen is doing his thing to help out another country dealing with the memories of another shooting tragedy.
The singer made a surprise appearance in Norway Sunday night (July 22) where he performed at the memorial concert marking the one year anniversary of the tragic shooting rampage and bombing carried out by Anders Behring Breivik. In all, Breivik killed eight in his bombing of a government building and another 69 after opening fire at a Labour Party youth camp.
Contact Music reports that Springsteen and E Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zandt took the stage to perform the anthemic song, ‘We Shall Overcome,’ which brought significant presence to the night’s theme. The singer kept his commentary brief, telling the 60,000 in attendance, “Steve and I are honored to be included here tonight. For all of us who love democracy and tolerance, it’s an international tragedy.”
Breivik has admitted to the killings and his trial concluded last month. At present, a verdict is pending on whether he will be sent to a psychiatric ward or prison based on his sanity. The ruling is expected Aug. 12.
