Granny Panties Go High Fashion Thanks to Balenciaga
Who knew? If you want high fashion, go through your grandma's drawers. There you might find your grandma's "drawers"-granny panties. Oh I know what you're thinking. Granny Panties? High Fashion? Really?
Really.
High fashion house Balenciaga is now selling granny panties for $225 a pair. Already, social media says these granny panties are reminiscent of those Renee Zellweger wore in the film "Bridget Jones' Diary".
Of course, high fashion doesn't just come in one color. The Balenciaga collection comes in black, white, brown, beige and light beige. Ok. That's a bit bland. Why not bold colors like red, chartreuse, or the ever naughty, nude. That's a fun color.
Karolina Laskowska, the director of the Underpinnings Museum, an online museum dedicated to undergarments, wrote in an email quoted by "Vox" that from the 19th century to the 1910s, long, crotchless underwear was the go-to for women. Then tap pants, looking like silky short shorts, ruled the underwear world until the 1940s and ’50s.
But granny panties were flung off by liberated women in the 60's when they were burning bras too. Thongs became popular for a moment, because they were seamless. You would think that with so little fabric, thongs would have been cheaper. They were not.
When thongs went out and granny panties started getting popular again, at least women were getting more fabric for their money. In 2014, Kim Kardashian was donning granny panties and Rihanna sported them in an Instagram post promoting her Fenty collection. So, it should be no major surprise that today we are at the point where granny panties are now high fashion again.
Just wait until Harry Styles or Lil Nas X starts wearing them. Now, that would be a great way to strike a pose for gender fluidity. Although, I wouldn't want to strip down to those in my favorite San Angelo locker room, but to each his or her own. I'm not sure they would work with the rodeo set either. Chaps and granny panties? I think not.
I'm just wondering what else you might find in your grandma's closet that just might come back in style again. Remind me to tell you about "Coastal Grandmother" style. It is also all the rage. It is also very expensive. Grandma might just be a millionaire and not know it. With my knowledge of eBay and grandma's closet full of fashions, wealth can't be too far behind. Granny panties here we come.
