Halsey opened up about her forthcoming album, Manic, and why it's not what she expected.

During a new interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music’s Beats 1, the 24-year-old pop star spoke candidly about inspired her new single "Graveyard" and the reason her new record went from being angry to "lighthearted."

"Yeah, it’s very human," Halsey revealed about the new track. "A lot of those sounds are super organic. It’s a lot of people sounds...it’s skin, you hear skin, you can tell there’s people making it.”

She explained that after she wrote "Nightmare" she was at a point in her life where she was mad at everything and thought Maniac was going to consist of "angry dark music." However, all that soon changed.

"I sat there to make this album and I was like, 'Yeah, I'm going to make an angry album.' And I wasn't mad," the singer continued. "It's exciting. It's really exciting because it's very... It's new for me, doing something that feels kind of lighthearted. I'm closing a chapter in this record that I feel very much like I needed to put the final word on, put the nail in the coffin if you will. Graveyard, marry it.”

Halsey acknowledged her chart-topping single "Without Me" was a "blind declaration of love," while "Graveyard" is her taking accountability for her actions and the positions she willingly put herself in for love.

“In some ways, it’s a metaphor. It’s about like loving someone to death, kind of. And then in other ways, it’s actually pretty literal," she said. There’s a lot of moments in the song that are pretty literal, which was kind of scary to write about. But you know me, I find the scary thing and I do it.”
