August is National Dog Month, a time to celebrate our furry friends and recognize their efforts to improve their lives. Started by the Milk-Bone dog treat company in 2020, this month-long celebration aims to bring attention to the needs and joys of our canine companions. As an animal lover and radio DJ, I've had the privilege of participating in various initiatives to support and promote dog adoptions and welfare in Abilene, Texas.

Living in Abilene and across West Texas, we're no strangers to soaring temperatures. With the mercury often climbing above 100 degrees, ensuring that our pets are well cared for is crucialThis National Dog Month, I want to share a few personal stories and highlight the importance of looking after our dogs, especially during these hot summer months.

One of my most memorable experiences was spending 48 hours in a dog-pound kennel. Yes, you read that right! I ate, drank, and slept in a tiny kennel at the Abilene dog pound to raise funds for dog beds and food. Thanks to the community's generosity, we raised close to $20,000. Another unforgettable event was when I lived in a dog house on the corner of Southwest Drive and Catclaw Drive for three days. This was part of a dog adoption and fundraiser for Rescue the Animals and the Abilene Animal Shelter.

Recently, I also had the chance to rescue some feral cats from the local hospital, further cementing my commitment to animal welfare. But dogs hold a special place in my heart, and this year, instead of the usual flowers and chocolates for Valentine's Day, I surprised my wife with a golden retriever named Jane, adopted from the All Kind Animal Shelter in Abilene. Jane has brought so much joy and energy into our home, becoming a great companion to Princess, my daughter's therapy dog.

Dogs have an incredible ability to make our lives better, providing companionship, joy, and even therapy. As we celebrate National Dog Month, let's not forget those dogs out there suffering in the heat. Ensure they have plenty of water, shade, and love. If you see a dog in distress, don't hesitate to take action.

Let's make National Dog Month not just a time of celebration but also a time of compassion and care for our furry friends. After all, they give us their all; it's only right that we do the same for them.
