Why Texas DPS Is Warning to Avoid Using Credit Card Skimmers

As Black Friday and the holidays approach, shopping is kicking into high gear, and the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is advising shoppers to be extra careful when using credit card skimmers. If there is anyway possible to avoid using a credit card skimmer, do it. Criminals across the lone Star State are increasingly using these devices to steal financial information at gas pumps, ATMs, and other payment terminals. To stay safe, DPS recommends using tap-to-pay methods instead or trusted mobile payment apps whenever possible.

Watch for These Signs of Skimmers

While many skimmers are hidden deep inside gas pump cabinets, some signs of tampering can be seen and/or detected if you'll pay close attention. I recently had my debit card hacked and I started getting mysterious charges showing up. I do believe that it was a credit card skimmer machine. Still, be on the lookout for these types of devices and most are detected by simply tugging, checking and inspecting the credit card devise. Here are things to look for:

• Inspect the gas pump cabinet: Does it look damaged or altered?
• Wiggle the card slot: Is it loose or suspiciously attached?
• Check the keypad: Does it feel off or appear as though something has been added on top?

Tips to Protect Yourself from Fraud

If tap-to-pay isn't an option, here are additional ways to safeguard your financial information:

• Use a credit card instead of a debit card to protect your bank account and PIN.
• Enable transaction alerts for your bank and credit cards through mobile apps.
• Monitor your statements regularly to catch fraudulent charges early.
