Another Great Place for Families to Camp and Hike in Texas

Texas is getting another incredible place for friends and families to come together in the great outdoors for some fun camping hiking, and in general outdoor fun with mother nature in Texas.

New 3,000-Acre State Park Near Colorado Bend Is Underway

As an avid outdoorsman and proud Texan, there’s nothing better than discovering another wide-open, wild space to explore. That’s why I’m excited to share this big news from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD). The state has officially completed phase two of purchasing more than 3,000 acres in Burnet and Lampasas Counties to create a brand-new Texas State Park near Colorado Bend.

A New Outdoor Haven Along the Colorado River

This new property is right across the river from the Colorado Bend State Park and includes a mile and a half of the Yancey Creek, limestone bluffs, and several natural springs. The second-phase purchase adds 1,100 acres to the previously acquired 2,020 acres, forming what will be one of Texas’ newest most awesome outdoor jewels.

The land was acquired using funds from the Centennial Parks Conservation Fund, a $1 billion voter-approved initiative that aims to expand public access to natural spaces across the Lone Star State. The goal? To give more Texans, especially families, the chance to experience the outdoors — hiking, camping, fishing, or just soaking in nature’s beauty.

More Parks, More Adventures for Future Generations

TPWD has been busy lately. This announcement follows other major purchases, including 3,703 acres at Enchanted Rock and 500 acres at Lake Colorado City State Park. It’s all part of a bigger plan to preserve nature while creating more places for families to unplug and reconnect.

“This acquisition will give visitors access to the Colorado River, a beautiful creek, and diverse landscapes,” said Rodney Franklin, director of Texas State Parks. “We look forward to generations of Texans enjoying the scenic views and outdoor adventures.”

What Comes Next

While the opening date has yet to be announced, the TPWD has begun developing a full park plan and is seeking your input and ideas. Once it's finished, this new park will be a reminder of what we Texans can do when we work together and invest in the land, our families, and the future of outdoor recreation in Texas.

Personally, I can’t wait to hike it, camp under the stars, and maybe cook breakfast on an open campfire, and make it one of my new favorites, right up there with Big Bend and Possum Kingdom.
