Why On Death Row So Long?
Of these seven women, the last one to be put on death row was in 2022. But most have been there for several years including one who has been sitting on death row since 1995.
I've often wondered why these criminals, who have been convicted for some really bad crimes, are on death row for so long. To me, it seems that taxpayers and the state are still having to pay for someone who did an unspeakable act, was convicted, and is scheduled to be put to death.
I guess the short answer is that it minimizes the risk of executing an innocent person. I get that. But as I mentioned, one of these women has been on death row since 1995. It seems like that is plenty of time to make sure whether they actually are innocent or not.
Of course, then there is the debate on whether we should even have the death penalty or not. That's an argument for a different article.
