The Dangers of Frying Your Holiday Turkey Wrong
Well, crud, all this time I thought that the big fireball that shoots out of my cousin's deep fryer as we drop in the frozen Thanksgiving turkey was just a holiday tradition. Apparently, according to firefighters, that tradition is "not safe."
As Thanksgiving gets closer, firefighters around Texas are putting on some dramatic safety demos. Not because there’s an emergency, but to show what could happen if you fry a turkey the wrong way. You can check out one such video by scrolling to the end of this article.
Avoid Turkey Frying Disasters this Thanksgiving
In the demo below, firefighters drop a frozen turkey into a pot of boiling oil. Within seconds, the oil overflows, bursts into flames, and sends fire shooting into the air. It’s a quick, fiery lesson. Hot oil and frozen meat are a dangerous combo.

According to fire safety experts, deep-fryer fires cause millions of dollars in damage every year. Most of the time, the cause is simple. There is usually too much oil, a wet turkey, or they set up the fryer too close to something that can catch fire.
To stay safe, firefighters say to make sure your turkey is fully thawed, set up the fryer outside on a flat surface, and never leave it alone while it’s cooking. It’s also smart to keep a fire extinguisher nearby, just in case.
