I am not a marijuana user myself. I've tried it (lots of times), but it was never an enjoyable experience. I just ended up thinking everyone knew that I had smoked pot, and they probably did since I would ask every person I was talking to, "Do I look high? Can you tell that I was smoking weed?"
As a gun owner I like to be as knowledgeable as I can regarding gun laws and regulations, and this is something that did not know would cause you to lose your 2nd amendment rights in the great state of Texas.

Medicinal Marijuana

In 2015 Texas passed the Compassionate Use Program (CUP) gave physicians the ability to prescribe THC to patients with certain medical conditions. The conditions included, but were not limited to, epilepsy, autism, and terminal cancer. If someone wanted to get a prescription they would have to see a CUP certified doctor. A list of those doctors can be found here. Once they were prescribed their medicinal marijuana card, the patient could then go to a legal medicinal dispensary to purchase the marijuana.

Gun Control Act

The Gun Control Act of 1964 was put into place in order to prevent people who use or are addicted to controlled substances from owning firearms. The Act's purpose is to keep people that pose a risk to our society from having guns in their possession.

Because, federally, marijuana is considered a Schedule 1 controlled substance it is considered highly addictive, and the there is no federal law giving it medicinal usage. You are not allowed to smoke marijuana and own a gun in the state of Texas because of the Controlled Substance Act of 1970.

Medicinal Marijuana Card

If you have a medical marijuana, then according to Texas that is considered proof that you are a Schedule 1 drug user. Therefore, you cannot purchase a firearm under federal law.

Since federal law outweighs state law, marijuana is still illegal. The company you work for is allowed to require its employees to refrain from using marijuana, and they can terminate you for violating that policy. Similarly, because of the federal law, gun shops in Texas will not sell you a gun if they run a background check because your medicinal marijuana card will show up on the background check.
