If you’ve been proudly lugging around one of those giant 64-ounce Ozark Trail stainless steel bottles from Walmart, it might be time to put it down gently and maybe even back away slowly. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) just announced a nationwide recall of 850,000 of these bottles because, well… they’ve been shooting their own lids off.

And not in a fun, "soda exploded in the car" kind of way. These things are launching black screw-top lids with enough force to cause permanent vision loss, which has already happened to two people. Another unlucky customer just got hit in the face.

This is serious, Texans.

Why Are These Bottles Exploding?

According to the CPSC, the problem happens when people store food, carbonated drinks, or perishable liquids like juice or milk inside the insulated bottles. Over time, pressure builds up, and when you twist that lid open, it can fly off like a champagne cork with an attitude.

The recall specifically affects the Ozark Trail 64 oz Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottles sold at Walmart since 2017. They have a silver stainless-steel body, a black screw-on lid, and the Ozark Trail logo on the side. The official model number is 83-662, though you won’t find that on the bottle itself, just on the packaging.

So if you’ve been using yours as a personal thermos for leftover sweet tea or Texas chili (we’re not judging), stop. Right now.

What Texans Should Do Next

The recall is nationwide, but let’s be real, Texas is prime Ozark Trail country. If you’re one of the thousands of Texans hauling this monster of a water bottle to the ranch, the gym, or your kid’s football practice, stop using it immediately.

Walmart says you can:

  • Return it to any Walmart store for a full refund

  • Or contact Walmart customer service to process a refund if you can’t make it to a store

And no, duct taping the lid shut isn’t a recommended fix.

Better Safe Than Sorry

Walmart released a statement saying, “The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority.” Which is good, because a 64-ounce projectile to the face is not on anyone’s to-do list.

So check your bottle, Texas. That ice-cold water isn’t worth risking an eye patch.
