After winding down Transparent, series creator Jill Soloway will next take on a very different sort of project: Writing and directing the new film version of Red Sonja.

Via Deadline, here is Soloway’s comment on the news:

I can’t wait to bring Red Sonja’s epic world to life. Exploring this powerful mythology and evolving what it means to be a heroine is an artistic dream come true.

Sonja was previously the subject of a 1985 movie starring Brigitte Nielsen as the title character, directed by Richard Fleischer. Although Red Sonja originated in Conan the Barbarian comics (she was based, at least in part, on a similar character named Red Sonya from Conan pulp author Robert E. Howard), and even though cinema’s Conan, Arnold Schwarzenegger, co-starred in the first Sonja movie, it was not a direct spinoff from the two Conan movies released around that time. (Schwarzenegger played a different character, a Lord Kalidor.)

That Red Sonja film was widely regarded as a stinker; Schwarzenegger has famously called it his worst movie (and given that this man also appeared in a film called Hercules in New York, that’s really saying something). In other words, Soloway can only go up from there with her interpretation of the character.

The new Red Sonja’s distributor, Millennium Films, had previously hired Bryan Singer to direct the project, despite allegations of sexual misconduct and the fact that Singer was fired from his last film, Bohemian Rhapsody, and had to be replaced in the middle of production. Millennium initially stood by Singer, even releasing a statement in support of him (although the studio’s CEO later claimed he had never read the controversial press release). But then the project stalled, and now Soloway is in charge.
