Justin Bieber Not A Fan Of ‘Hollow’ Awards Shows, He Explains After BBMAs
Hours after taking home two Billboard Music Awards (and performing on the show's stage), Justin Bieber posted a lengthy caption to Instagram, expounding on his feelings about awards shows — and whether they do more harm than good on his own psyche.
"I don't know about these award shows," he wrote before assuring the producers and its participants that he intended no ill will toward them. Bieber's issue, he said, is with the concept of basing awards on artistic merit, and that it's caused him to wrap up his self-worth and value in his job instead of who he is as a person.
"I don't feel good when I'm there nor after. I try to think of it as a celebration but can't help feeling like people are rating and grading my performance...When I'm doing a regular show I feel they are there for the right reasons and to strictly have a good time! But these award shows seem so hollow," he wrote, a thought anyone who was watching last night's performance-heavy Billboard Music Awards broadcast was probably thinking.
"I get the premise is to award people for their accomplishments, but is it really? Because when I look in the audience I see a bunch of fake smiles so that when the camera hits them they look happy," Bieber continued, before noting that some attendees likely were expressing genuine moments of joy throughout the show -- it's just few and far between.
"I just think to myself if I'm living my purpose I want the reward to be fulfillment. I'm getting awarded for the things that I'm doing and not for who I am which is understandable I know it would probably be hard to calculate and award someone's spirit lol," he continued. "But When I do get these awards the temptation of putting my worth in what I do is so hard to fight!!!I am privileged and honored to be recognized by my peers in but in these settings I can't feel the recognition. There's an authenticity missing that I crave!"
Bieber has a point -- awards shows can often feel empty and artificial, and the notion of handing out awards based on creative achievements [ed note: or in the BBMAs' case, awards based on chart sales] seems counterintuitive to the arts. Still, it's unlikely these ceremonies will ever phase out completely, so hopefully Bieber can learn to keep finding contentment outside of a shiny statue.
