Kanye West Is Doing…Something…at The VMAs, Taylor Swift’s Skipping It
On Sunday (August 28), Kanye West might turn the pop culture world on its head in four minutes flat.
A year after West used the VMA stage to set a 2020 Presidential campaign into motion (and deliver quotes you won't soon find on Pinterest boards), MTV is tossing to him once again, TMZ claims. And, perhaps to capitalize on the intrigue West's colorful 2015 VMA Vanguard speech generated, the network's reportedly letting him do whatever he wants. Perform? Preach? Give rhythmic gymnastics a go? Nobody has any idea, but MTV's happy to hand off the mic either way.
While Britney Spears, Ariana Grande and more of Hollywood's A-listers will be around to see the magic (?), Taylor Swift — a mainstay of the show in recent years — will skip it. Still, according to People, it has nothing to do with West's stunt (wink) or the fact that his "Famous," which depicts a fictional Swift nude in bed with other celebrities, is nominated for Video of the Year (double wink).
It's been seven years since the 2009 VMAs, during which Kanye snatched the mic from Swift during her Best Female Video acceptance speech and the great Kanye/Taylor feud officially took shape. The war's most recent battle erupted in July, when Kanye and wife Kim Kardashian broadcast tapes that confirmed Swift knew about (and endorsed) seemingly unflattering "Famous" lyrics that West had written about her. She'd previously denied having any knowledge of the song or its sentiment, scolded West publicly for having written something defamatory, and took a moment to subtly shame West for the lyric in her 2016 Grammy acceptance speech despite telling him she'd confess to media that she was in on the joke.
What do you hope to see from Kanye at the show, and are you surprised/sad to hear Taylor won't be attending? Share your thoughts in the comments, and be sure to tune in to the show Sunday, August 29 at 9 PM EST on MTV.
