Lorde Spells Out ‘Divine Thrill’ of Making ‘Melodrama’ Amid No. 1 Debut
Twice is definitely nice for Lorde — Melodrama, the singer's sophomore album, has officially debuted at Billboard's No. 1 spot, and she's thanking fans for supporting her through its release.
According to Billboard, Melodrama racked up 109,000 album equivalents (82,000 in traditional album sales). Pure Heroine, Lorde's 2013 debut, sold more in its first week (129,000 copies, to be exact) but failed to surpass the No. 3 spot.
Lorde's the third woman to debut at the No. 1 spot in 2017 after consecutive top-tier premieres from Halsey and Katy Perry.
In a series of emotional tweets, Lorde recalled the experience of making the LP, and how it was true artistic validation.
"you guys, today we have the number one album in america. from the bottom of my heart, thankyou," she began. "royals was, to quote david chase, "a moonshot, a dreadnought". there were no such guarantees with melodrama—that's why this means so much. when i was a kid i thought big records had to be made a certain way—to be sterile & calculated in craft; that something had to be sacrificed. i have had the divine thrill of disproving that firsthand, twice over. jack and i made this in rooms alone, telling secrets and uncovering truths, and i just know that 15yo me would have been so fucking proud. SO WHAT I'N TRYNA SAY IS LET'S FUCKIN GEEEET IIIIIIT MORE JOY IN ALL OUR FUTURES MELODRAMA FOREVER."
