Magicians: they’re no longer just people who remind of you of the good choices you made in life when seen at children’s birthday parties. Magicians are now “cool” and “sexy” and “played by Lizzy Caplan.” She’s taking the place of Isla Fisher, who was presumably busy keeping a brave face as she watched her husband of six years crawl into an elephant’s vagina, as one of two new key acquisitions for the fledgling franchise. As the newly released trailer embedded above indicates, she’s one of three newcomers, along with Chinese singer Jay Chou and actual boy wizard Daniel Radcliffe, showing a little range by portraying a character who cannot do magic, but does somehow have access to every single computer in the world, which is slightly more implausible.

The trailer promises more of the flashy illusions and CGI spectacles that turned the 2013 original into a $351 million sleeper hit, with added menace from returning actor Morgan Freeman, a bitter disenfranchised magician intent on revenge. The whole Four Horsemen gang is back together, too, with expert card-flinger Dave Franco doing his darnedest to help out Woody Harrelson, while Jesse Eisenberg stops rain from falling and Lizzy Caplan gets to... remove her bra using magic. Jesse Eisenberg literally transforms his body into a puddle of water, and Caplan has magic bra-taking-off powers. The film even seems aware of the short shrift it’s dealt her character, what with the whole “and the girl Horseman!” bit falling flat. And while they evidently believe acknowledging that will make it better, in actuality, it makes it worse.

The film, scheduled for a June 10 release, will swap out original director Louis Leterrier for reliable blockbuster-generator Jon Chu (Jem and the Holograms, G.I. Joe: Retaliation) and retain writer Ed Solomon. If all goes according to plan, it will be passably entertaining, earn everyone involved a nice big check, and nobody has to get hurt. Hollywood, business as usual.
