Alaska Responds to ‘Drag Race’ Backlash Via Video, Snake References Abound
Last week's (October 6) penultimate episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars Season 2 was not without its fair share of drama. Not only was fan favorite Alyssa Edwards (unjustly!!!) sent packing by the episode’s end, but Alaska Thunderfuck exhibited some pretty petulant behavior onscreen, upsetting viewers who had previously rallied behind the frontrunner.
For the first time in the competition, Alaska was relegated to Bottom 3 status with her lackluster makeover, putting her at risk of being sent home despite otherwise dominating the competition.
Sensing the possibility of being forced out -- Alaska was the sole queen to receive major criticism from the judges -- she went into full on meltdown mode, going so far as to offer Detox a bribe to eliminate anyone else.
"I'll give you $10,000 if you let me stay -- before taxes," she said. "I'll transfer it to you via PayPal...I need to be in the final four."
In the end, Detox — who won the lip sync against Katya — sent Alyssa home, saving Alaska and perpetual poor performer Roxxxy Andrews (???).
Fans soon retaliated via social media, littering Alaska’s Instagram comments with snake emojis a la Taylor Swift. And while it seemed the backlash could've been Alaska's sudden undoing, she went the self-aware route instead -- posting a clever "Getting To Know Alaska" video that parodies the responses. (It's heavy on the snake references.)
"Saving Roxxxy Andrews, sending home fan favorites, borrowing clothes, speaking Parseltongue, shedding my skin every summer, throwing tantrums, offering bribes of 10,000 dollars…via paypal…before taxes," Alaska says, as she lists her favorite hobbies.
And in case you were wondering what happened to Alaska’s promise of $10,000, should Detox keep her in the competition, fear not: The pair decided to donate $5,000 each (before taxes) to charity instead.
Check out Alaska's (redeeming) videos above and be sure to tune in for the final episode of RuPaul's Drag Race All-Stars 2 when it airs on Logo on Thursday, October 13.
