It is time for Star Trek to boldy go where it has only gone twice before.

That would be a fourth film in a movie franchise. (The previous two times would be Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and Star Trek: Nemesis.) Although it appeared that the most recent Star Trek film series — featuring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana as Kirk, Spock, and Uhura aboard the original U.S.S. Enterprise — had quietly ended following 2016’s Star Trek Beyond, it looks like a fourth movie may be headed our way. Deadline that a new writer/director has signed on for the project: Fargo and Legion creator Noah Hawley:

Paramount Pictures is in final talks with Noah Hawley to write and direct a Star Trek film. Through his 26 Keys production banner he will produce along with JJ Abrams and his Bad Robot banner. I don’t have too much more to report on the film, but my understanding is Hawley will helm the fourth film in this iteration of the venerable franchise, with the Enterprise crew led by Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg and Karl Urban.

Shortly after Star Trek Beyond was released, Paramount announced a fourth film that would have partnered Pine’s Kirk with a time-traveling version of his father, played by Chris Hemsworth (who appeared, briefly and before his stardom as Thor, in 2009’s Star Trek). That project never came to pass, though, and the overseers of Trek turned their attention to Star Trek: Discovery.

As for Hawley, he’s had a lot of success on TV. His first feature film, though, was not a hit. Earlier this fall, he co-wrote and directed Lucy In the Sky, starring Natalie Portman a true story about an astronaut who turned to crime. With a reported budget of over $25 million, the film grossed less than $400,000 worldwide. Presumably this next project would earn significantly more than that...
