I'm sure you've noticed it.  The howling wind.  If there's anything loose on your house, the banging noise will drive you crazy. It is so windy here in San Angelo, maybe that's why Aermotor Windmill Company has their headquarters here. In addition, we've all noticed the large wind turbines just outside the city.

Those of us who've lived here all our lives don't think much about it. .  It is something visitors to this part of the country certainly notice. So how does San Angelo Winds stack up to the rest of the nation and Texas?

The windiest city in Texas is not far from here at all.  It's Robert Lee with an average wind speed of 23.17 miles an hour. Overall, San Angelo ranks #13 in Texas, but as you can see nearly all of the cities with higher average windspeeds in Texas are in our area.

Now, how about Chicago and the rest of the cities in the U.S.?  San Angelo's average wind speed of 21.72 miles an hour blows Chicago away. Their average annual wind speed is just 10.3 miles an hour!  In fact, San Angelo blows away the other Top 15 "windy cities in the U.S also.

So, if you ever hear friends from elsewhere talking about how windy their city is just remind them of this.  If they don't live on the top of Mt. Washington in New Hampshire (average wind speed 34.1) their city isn't as windy as yours. Batten down the hatches.
