Amazon Prime Day Wrapping Up…How To Avoid Scams

Getting great deals during Amazon Prime Days yesterday and today is like Christmas in July.  Turn on one of the Hallmark Channel's Christmas in July movies and you're really in business.

I admit that I'm not above the fray.  I've already upgraded my t.v. to a much bigger and better version at quite an incredible price.  I'm also looking at upgrading my computer. As exciting as the great deals are, there are some big pitfalls.  Amazon Prime Days are bringing out the scammers.

Hundreds of thousands of bogus emails that claimed to be from Amazon are in your inbox right now. Almost all of them include links that authorities say look just like legit links to Amazon's website.  These bogus links lead you right into their traps.  These websites allow scammers to steal vital information from your computer.

Law Enforcement Experts say to be safe you should never open any link sent by Amazon, even if they look legitimate.

Better Business Bureaus nationwide are already getting reports. Many times scammers pretend to be from Amazon and they will contact you saying before your order can go through they need to "fix your account". It's a lucky guess if you've already ordered something.  In our zeal not to miss out on good deals we may have already purchased, many people let their guard down.

To spot fake Amazon websites always look for misspelled words or check the URL at the top of the screen.  It should starte with "HTTPS".  The "S" stands for secure and it should have a lock symbol.

Also remember: A legitimate business is not allowed to send you unsolicited text messages.  You have to sign up for a business to be able to text you. Never click on any unsolicited links, ever. The Better Business Bureau also warns against emails or texts telling you that you've won a free gift but must pay for shipping.  Those are always scams.

If you do choose to buy something, always use a credit card.  Debit cards or peer to peer apps like Cashapp or Zelle give you almost no recourse if things go wrong.
