Colin Farrell In Talks to Play The Penguin in ‘The Batman’
The Batman looks to have the most formidable roster of DC villains of any movie about the Dark Knight released this century. It already has Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman and Paul Dano as the Riddler. Now, according to Deadline, we can add a third member of Batman’s Rogues Gallery to the mix: The Penguin, who will likely be played by Colin Farrell, who is currently “in talks” with Warner Bros. for the role.
The Penguin was first played on the big screen by Burgess Meredith, who appeared in the movie version of the 1960s Batman TV series as the infamous, bird-fixated fiend. The most famous movie rendition of the character remains the one from Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, where he was played by Danny DeVito as a deformed heir of a wealthy family, who abandoned him because he physically resembled a penguin. He spent decades living under the city, plotting his revenge.
As for Farrell, he’s appeared in a comic book movie before. In 2003, he starred as Daredevil’s arch-nemesis Bullseye in Daredevil. Rather than wearing the character’s signature costume, he looked and acted ... like this:
The early 2000s were a very strange and different time for Marvel movies than the one we live in now. The Batman is scheduled for release in theaters on June 25, 2021.
