Select Safe Costumes

When buying or making your costume, choose materials that are bright and reflective, making it easier to be seen. Also, make sure the costume fits right to avoid trips and falls. Keep in mind that masks can obstruct vision, so consider using face paint or makeup instead.

Practice Pedestrian Safety

When trick-or-treating after dark, carry a flashlight or glow sticks. Cross the street only at crosswalks or traffic signals. Look both ways before crossing, and make eye contact with drivers to make sure they see you. Stay on sidewalks whenever you can.

Check Treats Before Eating

Before tearing into that candy, make sure you thoroughly check it first. Toss any candy that has a torn wrapper or looks tampered with. Homemade treats are great but make sure they come from trusted friends and family.

Be Cautious of Decorations

Careful around decorations, especially those with open flames like candles or jack-o-lanterns. Make sure to wear flame-resistant costumes. Consider using battery-operated lights instead of candles.
