Bring Back Legacy Play Village: Lubbock’s Beloved Park Deserves a Comeback

I took Legacy Play Village for granted, and I think many in Lubbock did too. It drives me wild that I can't find a single photo I took there, even though I visited the playground often when my daughter was small.

Why Legacy Play Village Was So Special to the Community

Legacy Play Village, formerly located at 6401 Marsha Sharp Fwy W, was arguably the first inclusive playground in Lubbock- offering specialized swings for children who needed more support than the traditional strap of black rubber.

It was also huge and mostly fenced in, allowing Lubbock kids to run and get great exercise. I chased my daughter up and down the "castle" stairs to my aerobic benefit, too.

It was a wonderful place for parents to meet up and for kids to meet new friends, and since it was free, anyone and everyone could join the fun.

What Happened to Legacy Play Village?

Basically, it fell apart due to a lack of maintenance, as wood structures can only last so long in Lubbock's heat and wind. The city lacked the funds and the will to fund extensive repairs (it had always largely been a volunteer effort), so the park was bulldozed.

Benefits of Rebuilding Legacy Play Village for Lubbock Families

Lubbock desperately needs more amenities for families with children. And while we do have some lovely parks, nothing comes close to what Legacy Play Village once was.

No amusement park. No pools. No zoo. No aquarium.  Is it so much to ask for a large playground where kids can be kids... anywhere in Lubbock?
