San Angelo is getting ready to start the Memorial Day weekend and there are numerous activities, events, observances, closures and more to fill you in on.

There will be a Flag Laying at Belvedere Memorial Park Cemetery at 4240 Southwest Blvd this Friday at 8 am. Everyone is welcome to lay flags at veterans headstones at the Belvedere Memorial Park.

"Downtown Movie Night" returns just in time to kick off Memorial Weekend this Fri, May 28th with their first movie of the 2021 series. Don't miss Aladdin and good luck on winning one of two bicycles to be given away as well. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets to get comfortable during the movie which will play at dusk (around 9:00-9:15 pm). Movies are shown in the parking lot at 17 East Twohig between the Cactus Hotel and Miss Hattie's. The season runs from May 28th through Aug 27th every Friday night.

Johnson's Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens will be placing U.S. Flags on Veterans Graves at 8 am on Saturday, May 29th. They are also holding a Memorial Day presentation on Monday with Patriotic music & hot dogs. It's a come and go event.

This Sat, May 29th the San Angelo Elks Lodge #1880 is holding a  free hamburger lunch for Military Veterans and First Responders. The lunch is being served at 2121 South Chadbourne from 11am-2pm in a drive through fashion. Donations will be taken for the families of Samuel Leonard and Stephen Jones, the two local officers killed in the line of duty earlier this month.

San Angelo's Municipal Pool opens on Memorial Day weekend  from noon to 6 Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Admission is $5 for ages 3-64, free for children 2 and younger, and $3 for ages 65 and older. For more information, visit cosatx.us/pool.

Sat, May 29th "Jesus Rocks The River" is a free family-friendly event at the San Angelo River Stage from 12 noon - 10 pm. Enjoy live music all day and night, a free bounce house, free face painting, free food, T-shirt giveaways, a silent auction, ministry booths, a youth group challenge and more. The American Legion Golf Tournament is being held this Sat & Sun, May 29th and 30th from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days at Riverside Golf Course. Have a lot of fun with this two-day event all while helping Post 572 raise funds for American Legion programs supporting our local community. For more information, call 817-395-2674.

The San Angelo Courthouse Memorial Day Ceremony and Veterans Monument Rededication takes place this Monday, Memorial day at 5 p.m. at the Tom Green County Courthouse.

Day passes to Middle Concho and Spring Creek parks at Lake Nasworthy are available at their entry gates for $3 per vehicle for City residents and $6 per vehicle for non-residents. Camping permits cost $6 per campsite per night for City residents and $12 for non-residents. Permits can be purchased at the entry gates or Spring Creek Marina.

Fort Concho will hold Memorial Day exercises on Monday at 9 am in front of the Headquarters Building at the east end of the Parade Grounds providing artillery salutes and memorial rifle volleys. Fort Concho will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Memorial Day for self-guided tours. For more information, call 481-2646 or visit fortconcho.com.

Most City offices will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day. However, there will be no interruption in garbage collection or landfill operations. Among the City operations that will be closed on Monday are:

Animal Shelter
City Hall and the Community Development Building
City Hall Annex
Municipal Court
Nature Center
Parks and Recreation offices
San Angelo-Tom Green County Health Department

City offices will reopen at 8 a.m. Tuesday, June 1.

To find out, Stacker consulted data from WalletHub, released June 17, 2020, that compares U.S. beach towns. Ratings are based on six categories: affordability, weather, safety, economy, education and health, and quality of life.
