XXXTentacion’s Mother Accepts Posthumous 2018 AMAs Award on Behalf of Slain Rapper
XXXTentacion posthumously won the 2018 American Music Award for Favorite Soul/R&B album on Tuesday (October 9). The late rapper's family accepted the award for 17 on his behalf. XXXTentacion's mother, Cleopatra Bernard, took the mic and began by saying, “I’m so nervous, you guys.”
She continued, “I am honored to accept this award on behalf of my son. I would like to thank the AMAs, his fans, and to everyone who made this possible. Thank you guys so much. I appreciate it."
The other nominees for the category of Favorite Soul/R&B Album were Khalid for American Teen, and SZA for CTRL. XXXTentacion won for 17, his debut studio album released in August 2017.
XXXTentacion was murdered on June 18, 2018. The crime was captured by surveillance cameras at the scene. The "SAD!" rapper died by gunshot in a burglary after leaving Riva Motorsports motorcycle dealership in Deerfield Beach, Florida. He was 20 years old.
Two days after his death, suspect Dedrick Devonshay Williams was arrested in association with the killing on charges of first-degree murder without premeditation.
