Can You Legally Own A Rooster in San Angelo?
Roosters can be annoying. No doubt they crow loudly at the crack of dawn. Some people really like the sound of a growing rooster. Others not so much. Roosters can also be aggressive. I remember turning my back on my grandma's rooster when I entered her pen to get the eggs one day as a child.
Those sharp rooster spurs can really hurt.
With all that in mind, there are some cities where it is plain illegal to own a rooster. Fortunately for rooster lovers, San Angelo is not one of them.
According to the city ordinance in San Angelo, (3.900) chickens are allowed in the city limits of San Angelo. However, they must be at least 100 feet from any residence, business, or institution, other than the residence, trade, or institution of the owners of the animals.
While you can own one rooster in San Angelo, more than one is prohibited.
Of course, if there is an HOA in your neighborhood, you will need to check with them before you bring chickens onto your property. Generally, an HOA can overrule city laws when it comes to such things as owning chickens.
Another thing to consider is the dangers of handling chickens. Since the 1990's numerous widespread outbreaks of human Salmonella infections have been linked to contact with backyard chickens. There are avian flues that can also infect humans via inhalation or contact with the eyes, nose, or mouth.
If you have chickens, you can reduce the risk of disease by washing your hands thoroughly with soap immediately after touching poultry or anything in their habitat. Children must be supervised when handling chickens.
In addition, birds and other poultry should never be kissed or snuggled. I can't believe this needs to be said. Likewise, chickens should not enter areas where food is consumed or prepared and should not enter your home.
Chickens can be very rewarding animals to have around. There's nothing like fresh eggs. As long as you wash your hands after handling them or being in their pens and don't kiss or snuggle with them, things should go well.
