Is San Angelo Devoid of the Best Barbecue?
Texas is known for its barbecue. We are renowned worldwide for being the best of the best when it comes to places for barbecue.
Knowing that barbecue is big here in the Lone Star state, Texas Monthly on Monday came out with their list of the 50 top barbecue joints in the state. The list is the 6th compiled by the publication since 1997.
Some new places made this year's list which includes barbecue joints from Abilene to Woodway, Texas on their top 50 and another 50 on a list of honorable mentions. Staffers visited over 400 barbecue joints across the state
But there was one thing that stuck out to me. Maybe I didn't look hard enough, but I found nary a San Angelo joint on the list.
Why is that? Did the Texas Monthly staff skip over San Angelo on their barbecue travels? Or maybe they don't think we have a good barbecue joint here when they stopped in our city? Maybe we do, but Texas Monthly doesn't seem to think San Angelo has one that makes the top 50 or even the top 100 in the state of Texas?
I can't really explain why there are not any joints here in the top 50 or top 100. I do know we do have a lot of fast-food chicken places here. Knickerbocker Road is littered with them. You have Raisin Cane's, Chick-Fil-A, and Golden Chick all on Knickerbocker. Heck, you used to have Bush's Chicken on Knickerbocker, but I guess having 4 chicken joints on the same road was maybe one too many.
I do not frequent many barbecue joints. So, I can't really speak to this list because I'm not really a barbecue expert. But maybe you are. Tell us where the best barbecue joints are in San Angelo. And tell us if you think they should be in the top 50. Let us know on Facebook or on our station app.
