Texas Law Enforcement Expert Calls Permit Less Carry ‘Problematic’

A Dallas area law enforcement official worries about the safety of police officers if the permit less carry bill passed by the Texas House is signed by Governor Greg Abbott.

In a video posted by WFAA-TV, Dallas Police Association President Michael Mata told Y’all-itics he is concerned that law enforcement officers will not know "who the bad guy is" when they respond to a scene.

“We have no idea who the good guy is. I heard time and time again, the legislature say, well, the good guys are going to carry guns. Well, nobody wears a t-shirt that says I’m the good guy,”

House Bill 1927 is being considered by Republican Governor Abbott, but is also facing stiff opposition from Democratic Senator Cesar Blanco after the deadly shootings in El Paso in 2019 according to the Texas Tribune.

“We’re not living up to the work that we did in the aftermath of those shootings, and quite frankly, it’s been forgotten,” said El Paso Sen. César Blanco, one of several Democrats who pushed for gun restrictions after the Walmart shooting when a gunman killed 23 people. The shooter posted a racist manifesto online shortly before the attack, admitting he was targeting Mexicans. “My best hope was to pass a lot of these sensible bills to keep our community safe, but [permitless carry] drastically moves the goal posts.”

The Tribune reports Blanco proposed several amendments to gun safety laws following the 2019 shootings, but the Texas Senate rejected his proposals.

The permit less carry bill on the governor's desk would not require training to carry a handgun in the state of Texas.
