Wine has never been more popular. When most people think of fine wine they think of Napa, Sonoma, France, and Italy.  You can add Texas to that list.

Texas wines are now winning awards over wines made in some of the world's premiere wine-producing areas.  With Valentine's Day, the season of love coming up, wine becomes an important part of a romantic evening.  It is not the time for experimentation or guesswork.

We've all purchased a wine only to discover it is frankly, not good. Visiting a winery is a great way to sample different wines and select the perfect wine for your taste.

Here in Texas, the biggest wine-grape growing region is in the panhandle. The rich red alkali caliche soils are best known for cotton, peanut, and row crops. Lately, more and more vineyards are popping up.

San Angelo is no stranger to wine-growing grapes. In fact, there are some fine, award-winning wineries in our general area of Texas.  They include:

Brix Winery 113 E Concho Avenue St. 200 San Angelo

The Brix Winery continues to gain wider recognition. It is not a huge winery, but what they lack in quantity they make up for with quality. For 8 years in a row, they have won Wine Spectator's "Best of Award of Excellence." Brix makes wine in a variety of unique flavors.

They have a dazzling array of sweet and dry wines like the "Blackberry Merlot, Malbec, and Peach Bellini. They are known for their service and incredible cheese plates with grapes and crackers.

Christoval Vineyards 5000 Cralle Road Chritoval, Texas

This incredible vineyard is just 15 miles south of San Angelo. When it comes to awards, Christoval Vineyards has won a number of awards competing successfully with wines from some of the best wine regions in the world. For example, Tempranillo won awards from Finger Lakes NY, Lone Star Int’l, San Antonio Rodeo, San Angelo Rodeo - Rustic Cellar, and San Francisco Int’l.

Just a few hours away in Fredericksburg, there are many wineries.  Another great winery fairly close to San Angelo is:

Seifert Cellars 15051 Lake Ivie Drive Millerview Texas

According to their website, the Seifert Cellars and Wild West Vines began in 2005 as a dream to grow quality grapes and produce quality wine in the Concho Valley. Currently, nine acres are in cultivation including Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier, Riesling, Syrah, Vermentino, Chenin Blanc, and Tempranillo.

They say:

"There may be easier places to grow grapes,

There may be more famous places to grow grapes,

There may be a lot of places other people grow grapes,

Seifert Cellars is just an hour east of San Angelo.

A common phrase told and re-told by winemakers everywhere is, "the best wines are those enjoyed with good friends". Certainly, that is true, and finding the perfect wine for a romantic Valentine's evening is priceless. It is great to know, some of the best can now be found right here in Texas.
