Are You Ready to See the World’s Best SPAM Eaters?
Do you love SPAM? I'm talking about the meat, not the email. Nobody loves SPAM email.
Well, the world's best SPAM eaters are coming to Texas.
The "Spamarama" eating contest is coming to the Circuit of the Americas racetrack in Austin later this month. According to KXAN-TV:
Major League Eating, the world’s governing body for competitive eating, will stage the event at 6:30 p.m., Oct. 23 at the track. Officially called the Spamarama World SPAM Eating Championships, some of the world’s most ferocious eaters will have eight minutes to compete for a $2,500 top prize.
Competitors in the field include 3 of the top 10 eaters in the world:
- No. 2-ranked Geoffrey Esper from Oxford, Massachusetts
- No. 5-ranked Mike Sudo from Tampa, Florida
- No. 6-ranked Nick Wehry from Tampa, Florida
There are also three Texans competing if you want to cheer on the best SPAM eaters in the Lone Star state:
- No. 45-ranked Jocelyn Walker from Sherman
- No. 46-ranked Greg Wilson from Austin
- No. 49-ranked Alex Perez from Dallas
If you're hoping to see a record broken, someone is going to have to chow down some serious SPAM.
The world record for spam consumption was set in 2004 by Richard LeFevre. He chowed down six pounds of the canned meat in 12 minutes.
Major League Eating is the organization behind more than 80 competitive eating events each year, including its most famous hot dog eating contest on Coney Island in New York every July 4.
I had no idea SPAM competitive eating was such a thing. It's so much of a thing that there are worldwide rankings of competitors. I personally can't stand SPAM, but hey to each his own.
